Despite the name, the English Shepherd is an American breed descended from the English shepherd dogs that accompanied the immigrants when this country was settled. These English and Scottish dogs are also the ancestors of the Border Collie (which were selected for sheep work in Great Britain subsequent to the immigrations that brought the dogs here) and Australian Shepherd. The English Shepherd is your basic farm collie, used in this country for a couple of hundred years on the family farm. They are meant to be an all-purpose farm dog, used for herding cows, sheep, whatever, and are especially handy in a farmyard situation. As all-purpose farm dogs, they were expected to help out in all sorts of situations, including stock work, hunting and guarding the family.
